Infertility

Infertility

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive when a couple has unprotected sex for 12 months and more. This inability is biological. In men, it is attributed to sperm disorders, and in women, it is due to hormonal issues or a polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Risk factors of infertility
  • Smoking.
  • Consumption of alcohol or any other narcotic substances.
  • Age. For men, the fertility drops progressively after 40 years of age, and for women, the fertility drops from the age of 30 years.
  • Obesity
  • Eating Disorders.
  • Under/Over exercising.
  • STDs.
  • Stress.
  • Exposure to some chemicals.

Women have infertility issues due to certain conditions like PCOS, poor egg quality, thyroid disorders, premature ovarian failure, sub-mucosal fibroids, endometriosis and some chronic conditions. Men have infertility issues due to low sperm count, low sperm motility, or abnormal sperm.

There are a lot of causes that lead to sperm disorders including some medications for bodybuilding, and chemotherapy. Couples are diagnosed with infertility after a series of tests including semen analysis, hormone tests, Hysterosalpingography, ovarian reserve testing, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases.
